Fire and Disaster Management Agency is the center of the fire defense administration

Fire and Disaster Management Agency is the center of the fire defense administration supporting the nation's fire defense forces consisting of over one million fire service personnel.

Agency's role in peace -The basis of the fire defense administration-

Fire and Disaster Management Agency formulates various measures to prevent disasters, such as fire, earthquake, storm, or flood damage, and to develop the necessary legal basis and improve armaments consisting of the materials and equipment necessary to minimize damage when a disaster occurs. It also functions as the contact in the national government for local autonomous bodies and fire defense-related organizations, while promoting fire defense administration in a manner comprehensible to the public in general. It maintains the security of people's lives through various fire defense and disaster prevention measures including public relations activities, fire defense organization reforms, and education and training of fire service personnel as well as members of Volunteer Fire Corps.

Agency's role in a time of need -Control tower in disaster control operations-

Japan is likely to be hit by an earthquake, volcanic eruption, storm, or flood due to its geographical and climatic conditions. Further increasing its inherent susceptibility are the socio-economic advancement and urbanization, increase of high-rise buildings, and utilization of deeper underground areas that are prone to threats from large-scale disasters, which, when they occur, could create situations that are beyond the local fire defense forces' ability to respond to. When we are confronted with such situations, Fire and Disaster Management Agency, which has knowledge of the fire defense systems throughout the country, will play the role of a control tower in disaster control operations. It will ensure prompt communication with and unerring instructions to the relevant fire defense organizations including Emergency Fire Response Teams to minimize damage.

Tasks of fire services

Utilizing the available facilities and human resources, fire services must achieve the following tasks:
(1) to protect people's lives and property from fire, and
(2) to take precautions against disasters such as storms, floods, fires and earthquakes and to mitigate the damage resulting from these.
