Fire and Disaster Management College

The College provides fire defense leaders and specialists with advanced, comprehensive education programs

There are strong needs for training competent fire service personnel capable of handling new types of disasters and accidents with the backing of knowledge on advanced science and technology. Fire and Defense Management College as an institution attached to Fire and Disaster Management Agency and provides core members of regional fire service personnel and members of Volunteer Fire Corps with professional, high-level education and training. It also sends lecturers to fire defense schools established by prefectures and designated cities under a government ordinance. Further, at the Fire and Defense Management College, various seminars are organized to facilitate the smooth implementation of fire services suited to the new age.

001 Nurturing fire defense leaders with advanced, comprehensive education programs

At the Fire and Disaster Management College, which consists of two departments, the General Education Dept. and Specialty Education Dept., and nine courses, 800 trainees receive education and training every year, utilizing its advanced facilities. In the General Education Dept., comprehensive knowledge and technology is taught to the leaders of fire services, chiefs of fire defense headquarters/fire departments, and chiefs of Volunteer Fire Corps, so that they may attain competency suitable for their positions. The Specialty Education Dept. trains leaders with advanced knowledge and technology relating to fire fighting, fire prevention, ambulance, rescue, and fire investigation. In addition, it also actively provides practical training for crisis management, NBC-related disasters, and airplane fire defense. 

002 Training for countermeasures against terrorist attacks involving NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical hazards)

Following the simultaneous terrorist attacks (9/11) and subsequent anthrax contaminated mail incidents in the US, antiterrorism measures are also being reviewed and reinforced radically in Japan. As for countermeasures against terrorist attacks involving NBC, it has been recognized as a pressing need to improve the crisis management ability of autonomous bodies' executive officers, to improve the practical management ability of regional fire defense headquarters, and to reinforce communities' ability to prevent disaster. Fire and Disaster Management Agency implements special materials and equipment necessary for controlling such disasters and gives seminars for NBC-related disasters as well as lectures for the fire fighting and ambulance courses. in the Fire and Disaster Management College.
